What is Zumba Fitness ?
Zumba is a Latin Inspired cardio dance workout fitness class that uses every muscle including the brain with music and choreographed steps meant to feel like a party atmosphere rather than boring exercise. The dance choreographies incorporate all over the world rhythms (but not limited to): salsa, merengue, cumbia, raggaeton, belly dance, Arabian, African, Bollywood, hip hop, samba, axe, swing, cha cha, flamenco and more.
You could burn between 400 to 900 calories per class, but it all depends on how you exert yourself. You will build cardio strength and tone muscles. Mentally, you will relieve stress, stimulate your brain by learning coordination and new steps, plus it makes you smile and sweat at the same time!
What can I expect at my first class?
The first thing is to not worry, we are going to have some fun! There is no intimidating atmosphere. Like anything new, we always like to worry – are we going to get the steps, what if I can’t do it, what if I look silly? The Zumba Instructor will lead the class in easy, simple movements with a combination of dance and fitness moves. Usually visual and hand cues are given. Zumba is your workout, you do it your own way, there is no right or wrong, and nobody is going to judge you on your ability. As long as you keep moving, however feels right to you, then that is all that matters. We all come together as one big group, moving to the music, and having fun together.
I haven’t exercised in a long time can I still attend?
Yes of course, you have to start somewhere. People of all fitness levels attend Zumba classes. You can keep all the moves low and won’t be forced to take the high intensity option. For the first couple of classes you may feel you want to just move your feet/or just your arms, over a couple of weeks you will soon feel very comfortable with the moves, and get a feel for all the different rhythms and dance styles we use. If you have any questions at all regarding the moves, your instructors are always available to go through any moves at the start or end of the class with you, we really don’t mind!
Do I have to be in good shape to do Zumba?
Not at all. I have all ages (6-70) in the same class with every ability level possible. The neat thing about Zumba is you only work as hard as you want to. Two people in the same class could do the same steps and one may not even break a sweat, while the other is drenched. You only get out of it want you want to put into it. Can’t handle high impact? No problem, your instructor should always demonstrate a low impact option. Need a break? That’s cool too – just march on the spot or do your own thing until you’re ready to get back at it. Previous dance experience is definitely not required. Just be prepared to sweat, have fun and party!
How often should I do Zumba, more than one class a week ?
I would suggest 1 per week for the first month after that 2 a week then add 3 per week once you have built up some cardiovascular strength. It doesn’t necessary have to be Zumba walking, bike riding, treadmill, or any type of cardio workout will benefit you… however, Zumba is the choice for most people, because it is fun and makes working out fun!
Do I need to bring anything with me ?
Wear any type of fitness clothes comfortable and appropriate for exercise that allows freedom of movement. Zumba clothes are obviously perfect, but clothes such as yoga pants, tank tops, t-shirts, short are good too. Wear what suits you and bring water and a sweat towel! Comfortable sneakers are imperative as there is impact work and your feet need the support and stability.
Will Zumba help me lose weight?
Yes. The long answer, as with any weight loss plan, is you will need to pair exercise with healthy eating in order to achieve long term weight loss. I know many, many people who have lost a considerable amount of weight doing Zumba, also it can tone up your abs, thighs, bums if done right. Like I said above, you only get out of it what you put into it.
Are they mixed classes?
Zumba is suitable for both men and women, the more, the merrier!
I have a problem with my knees/back, can I still do Zumba?
Zumba covers a variety of moves, however, if you let your instructor know about any ailments/injuries you may have and they will give you alternative exercises to do. Also you might want to give Zumba Gold a try, its is much lower impact and pace, but still great fun and marvellous exercise. Ask an instructor for help as we are able to modify the moves. We always suggest talking to a doctor before participating in any physical fitness routine. If you are concerned, ensure you speak to your physician.
I am pregnant, can I come to Zumba?
If you are pregnant, as long as you get the ok from your midwife or doctor, its fine for you to take part in Zumba as you can go at your own pace. Obviously, there may be some exercises that will not be suitable, but a quick word with your instructor will put your mind at ease. Every pregnancy and every woman is different. Zumba Gold may be an option for you at different stages of your pregnancy.
Can I buy the Zumba music?
Unfortunately we are not allowed to sell or give you the music we use at our Zumba classes. As instructors we are must have a PPL licence in order to play and use authorised Zumba music within our classes. However official Zumba music albums can be purchased from various companies, such as Amazon, Apple itunes who offer a range of Zumba cd’s.
